Baden Academy Charter School appoints first principal
June 9, 2014
The Board of Trustees of the Baden Academy Charter School today appointed Angela Abadilla to serve as the principal of the growing arts-infused public charter school. She will transition from her role as the senior program officer for arts education in the Pittsburgh Pubic Schools.
"Angela will be a perfect fit to provide leadership as we continue to execute our mission, vision, and academic program," said Sal Aloe, board president. "She earned a 4.0 in pursuing her masters in school administration and principals certification, has taught in a variety of elementary and secondary classroom settings over the past two decades, and has a wealth of hands-on, arts-related experience, particularly in music."
In her role with the Pittsburgh Public Schools, Abadilla oversees the development and implementation of an updated, standards-aligned K-12 arts curriculum that includes visual arts, music, dance, media arts, and theatre. She also increased awareness and understanding of arts by establishing the first parent arts advocacy organization for the district, and cultivated relationships among community leaders to raise support for arts education.
"Angela is a well-rounded educator and leader, whose skills are a perfect fit for us," Aloe said. "Her vision and passion, though, are what we are most eager to put to work for our students. You can't necessarily see those traits on her resume, but they are pronounced when she talks about effecting learning, growth, and positive change."
Abadilla grew up in Baden and began her professional career teaching music at Mount Gallitzin Academy, the site on which Baden Academy Charter School now sits. She has a bachelor's degree in music education from West Virginia University. She received her Master's of Education in school administration from the California University of Pennsylvania.
A resident of Allison Park, she currently serves on several arts-related boards and councils, including as a member of the Arts Education Collaborative Advisory Board and the Arts Education Partnership Forum Planning Committee.
